Its been 3 years since I have last lived here in Dublin, some things have changed, what the hell happened to the road network on the way out to Navan where once used to be so good for training, it’s carnage out there now. I spent way to much time on the back roads around there in the past, maybe I left some of my best riding on training spins out there when I was trying to give the bike a go a few years back, some would say I never had and good riding to leave behind,
“Over training” now that’s a topic for another time. This brings me on to the things that haven’t changed, the cyclist attitude. Generally the ones in all matching kit, white bar tape, shades on, shades even when its not sunny and of course no helmet, ”sure it would ruin your hair wearing one of those things”. The ego. The unfriendliness. The negative attitude, not all cyclist are like this, we can’t tarnish them all with that brush, but they are out there, we all have experienced it. When I was a cyclist I didn’t act like this! did I…..?Big shout out to Philip Lavery, thanks so much for the wave and salute while out training on the Trim road yesterday, In having this little rant I’m not asking to your best friend out there on the road. just a little respect, a nod, a tip of the hat so to speak, we are the minority on the road out there so lets get along.
Enough of that, I have started my new life of training in Dublin, The motivation is high, like when you buy something shiny and new you just can’t get enough if it, but I got to be carful and not loose the run of myself in this period of adaptation. Swimming at the NAC (National Aquatic Centre) at 5am, the 4.15am alarm is not a welcome sound. Its only 3 mornings a week at that time so not to bad, I had my first meeting with my strength and conditioning coach and Physio yesterday, Martina and Deirdre are going to fix me, I have a lot of work to do. Currently all my imbalances seem to cancel, each other. Perfect balance I say. They found the source of all evil with in me yesterday, and from next week the program to rid it starts. its an exciting time as I have some much room for improvement. Thats my new life back in Dublin, slowly finding my feet here again and putting in the foundations for an even bigger and better season next year

I couldn’t agree more about the snobbery in some cyclists I always nod / say hello but when some people even hear triathletes they treat you like an outcast such spas

Maybe it’s the jangle of all those medals round your neck that’s bothering young Lavery?!
