Centennial Park

I let myself get lost cycling around narrow back roads in Portugal with no clear path or direction, “I could turn left here, nope, let’s keep riding, three hours to do, sure you can go for longer before heading back, explore. Go further, so what if you ride longer. Enjoy the silence of quiet safe roads and the sun on my pale white winter skin”. I was at the mersey of nothing with food, money, spares in my back pocket.

This is what we dream of when out cycling on the road, cycling bliss where the only cars on the road are support vehicles filled with tasty treats when we feel energy levels dropping, where drivers give a friendly beep if you do happen to come across you, where farmers drive tractors at 50-60km and always give you a tow for at least 20km even if it is going out of their way. Where there are no such things as rush hour or heavy traffic. Where road surfaces are so smooth your average speed is always up by a few kph. Where climbs are never far. Where groups of good riders are always present for training.  Where there is always a good chase from a dog but you know he never will catch you, just keep you honest. Where descents and fast hairpins and switch backs are never too far away.

3 decades of racing and over 10 National Championships

I was swimming at the Irish National Championships and Olympic trails last week when it all hit. A kid of who was half my age in my heat asked me what time I hoped to go in the race. The last time I raced a 1500m in the pool would have been 1995 so I was hoping to go faster than I did back then I told him. He said he wasn’t born back in 95. I wished him good luck as we hopped up on the blocks and I’m guessing later on he told the story about racing an old man. He might call me old, Id say experienced. I got all nostalgic thinking of my sporting life and put this little snap shot together, it is best to keep it short otherwise we could be here a long time and I’d prefer not to bore you to sleep.

14 days to christmas eve all in one, I have been not been feeling the christmas cheer in Spain, 18 degrees and christmas songs don’t really go hand in hand with the sun. I have do decided to put the full run down from 14-1 in my christmas songs list here all in one post. If this was an advent calender it would be like opening 15 days in a row and eating all the chocolates inside. nom nom nomnoms.
